Pandit Mukhram Sharma, born on 29 May 1909 in the village of Poothi, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was a teacher by profession and began producing literature before venturing into the field of filmmaking. While working as a teacher, he continued to write poems and short stories, which he published under the pen name 'Ashant.' Mukhram's writing had a profound impact on one of his acquaintances, who suggested that he look for work in Mumbai. Unfortunately, unable find work in Mumbai, he went to Pune and joined the Prabhat Film Company. Initially, he worked as a speech coach, correcting Marathi actors' Hindi pronunciation.
He was quickly offered a job writing for films, and in 'Sant Dnyaneshwar,' he set the words to Keshav Vaman Bhole's songs (1940). Within a few years, he penned the dialogues and lyrics for the film 'Das Baje / Ten O'Clock' (1942) under the same label, which was a huge success. Against the grain, Mukhram Sharma opted to focus on social issues rather than the mythological and historical topics that were popular at the time. ‘Stree Janma Hee Tuzi Kahani’, his Marathi-language film, was similarly well-received. Dhool Ka Phool (transl. Flower of Dust) is a 1959 IndianHindi-languagefilm produced by B. R. Chopra and directed by B. R.'s brother Yash Chopra, being his first movie as a director, having been an assistant director in B. R.'s earlier film Naya Daur. The film stars Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Ashok Kumar and Nanda in lead roles along with Leela Chitnis, Jeevan and Manmohan Krishna. The story revolves around a Muslim man bringing up an "illegitimate" Hindu child and featured the classic song Too Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega, Insaan Ki Aulaad Hai, Insaan Banega on Manmohan Krishna, who also won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Abdul Rasheed. Besides that, Sinha received a nomination for Best Actress and Mukhram Sharma for Best Story.[citation needed] The film was remade in Telugu as Jeevana Teeralu (1977).
