On Tuesday 24 May 2016 PIASA will stage the second sale of a
collection devoted to Gustave Serrurier-Bovy (1858-1910) - the most
creative Belgian designer of his generation.
The exceptional ensemble, including works of historic importance
and museum quality, was assembled over thirty years ago by an Art
Nouveau devotee, and reflects the creative intelligence of Serrurier-
Bovy and his undeniable influence on 20th century furniture.
The first sale, offering new insight on the Art Nouveau maestro,
enjoyed great success at Piasa in May 2015.

About Art Nouveau
This is the story of a villa in Mar del Plata, a former beach resort for the aristocrats of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Why a story about one villa in such a remote area, far away from the European continent? Because the complete interior decoration of this villa was designed by Gustave Serrurier-Bovy, a famous Art Nouveau designer from Belgium. And while few opportunities exist to see a Serrurier-Bovy interior design in the original setting in Europe, the interior of Villa Ortiz Basualdo remains largely untouched. It is a ‘hidden’ gem that yet needs to be discovered by most Art Nouveau-afficionados from the European continent.

The History of Villa Ortiz Basualdo
Mar del Plata was founded in 1874 after a European model by rich families from Buenos Aires. These families were decendants of Spanish emigrants, with a house in Buenos Aires, a farm on the pampas, and a chalet at Mar del Plata, often called the Argentinian Biarritz. Of course, between moving back and forth from one residence to the other, they travelled extensively to Europe. From the Ortiz Basualdo family we know they descended from the Basque merchant Manuel Ortiz Basualdo, from Biscay, who arrived in Buenos Aires in 1769.
